How to Read Birth Charts

The birth chart, or natal chart, is a circular astrological diagram segmented into twelve numbered pieces. Each segment is known as a house, and each of the twelve zodiac signs of western astrology occupies one of the twelve houses. Together, the houses of the birth chart and the astrological signs that reside within them provide an individualized prediction of life occurrences. The birth chart also acts as an in-depth personality assessment which may be interpreted in various ways in order to gain deeper self-understanding.

Instructions

  1. Planets, Signs and Houses

    • 1

Identify your rising sign, or ascendant. The ascendant represents the astrological sign that the sun was in at the exact time and location of your birth. The ascendant can be found within the first house of the birth chart. If the first house contains the symbol for Virgo, for example, then your ascendant is Virgo.

    • 2

Discover which sign each planet was in at the date of your birth by noting which planetary symbols and astrological symbols occupy the same house. As an example, if your sun sign is Capricorn, the symbol for Capricorn and the symbol for the sun will reside in the same house on your chart.

    • 3

Make note of which house each planet and sign resides in. Record your findings by creating columns to list each house, planet and sign. Leave room to write descriptions of each item's characteristics.

    • 4

Look up the characteristics of each house and planet, as well as each astrological sign that resides in a house containing one or more planets. Details about each item's characteristics may be obtained from an astrology book or referenced from an astrological website.

    • 5

Analyze the influence that each planet has on the house and sign it occupies. Planets represent powerful forces that affect key stages of your life while astrological signs represent the manner in which you react to those forces. Life stages are represented by the houses of the birth chart.

    Influential Factors

    • 6

See if any planets reside in a power point. Planets that rest in the first house (ascendant), fourth house (nadir), seventh house (descendant) or tenth house (mid-heaven) indicate strength in their respective areas and the ability for events in each realm to progress quickly.

    • 7

Determine if any planets are in dominion. Planets that reside in the astrological signs that are their natural rulers have the ability to swiftly advance the affairs of the house they are in. For example, Mars is the natural ruler of Aries, and if present together in a chart will strongly influence the house it resides in.

    • 8

See if any planets are in mutual reception, where two planets occupy each other's sign. Planets in mutual reception will work together to advance one another in their houses.
