How to Make an Easy Paper Rocket Body

Paper rockets allow kids of all ages to explore the themes of space travel. You can make a paper airplane that you can launch through a straw. Consider cutting out planets and taping them to a wall or box as targets for the rockets.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Cellophane tape
  • Scissors
  • Wide or fat pencil
  • Wide straw (not the bendy kind)
  • Metric ruler

Instructions

  1. Making the Rocket

    • 1

Measure a 4- by 28-inch strip of paper. Cut out the number of strips you need, based on how many rockets you will make.

    • 2

Begin at the pencil eraser and wind the strip diagonally around the pencil until you reach the tip.

    • 3

Wrap tape around the pencil at each end and the middle to secure the rocket body.

    • 4

Cut off the ends so you have a tube at each end. Fold one end over itself and secure with tape, closing off one end of the tube.

    • 5

Cut out three small fins in the shape of a parallelogram. Cut small tabs on one side and tape the tabs around the bottom (open end) of the rocket.

    • 6

Insert a straw into the open end of the tube. To launch, blow through the straw.
