How to Read a Full Capricorn Horoscope

Interpreting a full Capricorn horoscope requires assessing the primary angular relationships between the sun in Capricorn and the other 10 planets in the natal astrological chart. Understanding these primary relationships, or "aspects," further reveals the Capricorn character.

  1. The Basics

Take notice of the moon's placement in the Capricorn natal chart. If you see the moon is in Taurus or Virgo, the moon sign trines (is at 120 degrees to) the sun in Capricorn. This is a positive position for the moon because it joins compatible signs of the same element, such as earth, fire, water or air, combining harmonious energies. If the moon is in Scorpio or Pisces, it is a sextile (60 degrees of separation between signs), making it a good placement, but less so than a trine because the signs are not of the same element, though still complementary, such as earth and water.
If the moon is in Cancer it is at 180 degrees, or "opposed" to the sun in Capricorn, which is a stressful placement because the two signs are diametrically opposed to each other. If the moon falls in Libra or Aries, a 90 degree "square," it is difficult because the elements are incompatible, such as fire and water.
Hence, a well- or ill-placed moon determines the feeling nature of Capricorn.

The position of Venus determines the loves and passions of the Capricorn. If Venus trines the sun, the passions and interests of the person will be accentuated, while if Venus is sextile, it is also a good placement but inferior to the grand trine. Squares and oppositions of the sun and Venus create a troubled, or at least challenged, love life.

Capricorn's ability to expand can be indicated by the position of Jupiter. For instance, if Jupiter trines the sun, the individual will do well in life without much effort. If the sun sextiles Jupiter it ensures material and business success as well. If the sun opposes or squares Jupiter, obstacles on the road to success are likely.

When the sun trines Mars it has a positive impact on the working life of the individual. When the sun sextiles Mars it also portends good luck in work, though not as strong as the trine. If Mars and the sun are in the same planet (Capricorn) you know the person is very devoted to work because the work sign is in the work planet. The sun square or opposed to Mars is a difficult, or at least challenging, placement affecting the person's attitude toward working in general.

The position of Mercury signifies the thought processes and mentality of the person. A sun trine Mercury will make thinking and communicating relatively easy, and a sun sextile Mercury is the same, but to a lesser degree. If the Sun squares or opposes Mercury there will be challenges to face and overcome. Thinking and feeling will not be as smoothly aligned where there is a square or opposition.

Saturn, Neptune and Pluto are generational planets, and their orbits affect a generation of people who have the same placements. The planet Chiron was discovered about 10 years ago and is considered a lower octave of Venus in the same way that Pluto is considered a lower octave of Mars---they possess the same qualities but have less impact. The influences of these planets are less personal, generally affecting a large group of people.
