Discover Your Elemental Affinities
Gather as much of your birth information as possible. Either contact your mother or locate your birth certificate in order to obtain your exact place and time of birth (or as close as you can get).
Obtain your chart through the internet or by looking it up using star charts in astrology books. For accuracy's sake, it's much better to use the internet. Use a website such as astro.com, which offers free natal charts. Enter your birth information and generate your chart.
Study the basics in order to know which signs of the zodiac are connected to which elements. Fire represents enthusiasm, confidence and passion and is associated with Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth represents practicality, patience and dependability and is associated with Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air stands for communication, intelligence and adaptability and is associated with Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Finally, the three water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, which are associated with compassion, empathy and creativity.
Look at your chart and write down the corresponding element of each of your signs. Eleven different positions will be taken into account for this task, which include your Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto signs. Because the Sun and Moon have greater influence on your personality, their elements count double while adding up the totals.
Examine this specific example to get a feel for the technique. Imagine someone has their Ascendant in Sagittarius, Sun in Libra, Moon in Capricorn, Mercury in Libra, Venus in Scorpio, Mars in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Capricorn, Saturn in Scorpio, Uranus in Sagittarius, Neptune in Sagittarius and Pluto in Scorpio. Note that Libra is an air sign, Scorpio is a water sign, Sagittarius is a fire sign and Capricorn is an earth sign.
Proceed by simply adding up how many signs fall within each element while keeping in mind that the Sun and Moon count for two each. Starting with fire, we have the Ascendant in Sagittarius, Mars in Sagittarius, Uranus in Sagittarius and Neptune in Sagittarius. That adds up to a value of 4 in the fire element. Earth is next, with the Moon and Jupiter in Capricorn. Because the Moon counts for double, that adds up to 3 in earth. Next, we have the Sun and Mercury in Libra, which is an air sign. Since the Sun carries twice the weight as the other planets, that makes 3 in air. Lastly, we have Venus, Saturn and Pluto in Scorpio which is a water sign, so that adds up to 3 as well.
Interpret the results to discover which elements are prevalent in the chart. Basically, if our elemental energies are made up of a total of 13 and there are four different elements, an average value to have in each element would be three. When you have two or less in a particular element, that means you are deficient in that element, while having four or more in an element makes you heavy in it. As you can tell, this individual is fairly well balanced but this is not always the case.
Put the pieces together. Individuals with a lot of fire energy (four or more) tend to be enthusiastic, passionate and daring, but they can sometimes be too aggressive. On the flip side, lacking fire in a chart can make someone timid and have low energy. When someone has an abundance of earth energy, they are grounded, stable and practical. People who have a low amount of earth energy tend to be unstable and bad with money. Those with a high amount of air energy are born thinkers and communicators, and have an easy time expressing themselves verbally and through writing. However, those with little air in their charts tend to be less adaptable and uninterested in mental pursuits. Finally, people with a preponderance of water are creative, emotional and sympathetic, while those lacking it can have a very difficult time understanding and expressing how they feel.
