Telescopes
A telescope helps a child get more personally acquainted with the solar system. In addition to giving him the chance to view the planets with his own eyes, it also creates an opportunity for more family time in the backyard. A variety of manufacturers make telescopes specifically for kids that can be purchased online from $40 to $150.
Models and Mobiles
Consider giving a model or mobile of the solar system as a gift. Models and mobiles usually require assembly, so kids can get more hands-on with their toys by helping put it together. Many kits let children construct and paint their own models, and some of them include a motor so the planets can move. They can be used as shelf or ceiling decoration; some of them even light up or glow in the dark.
Books
Visit the bookstore to pick up an activity book or an illustrated encyclopedia of the solar system. Several publishers offer colorful, informative books about space for children. Think sticker books, storybooks, pop-up books and interactive encyclopedias. Many of these types of books include informative tidbits of information alongside beautiful photos of space.
Star Charts, Maps and Posters
Consider wall decorations. They teach kids about the placement, size and color of all the planets while adding a distinctive look to a room. Many companies produce maps of the solar system, while others produce posters with star charts on them.
Puzzles
Puzzles have traditionally been used as gifts for children, and there is no shortage of such products that feature space as their theme. Many puzzles with planetary theme are aimed at younger kids. You can even find 3-D puzzles of spaceships if you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
