How to Make a Spaceship Model

Spaceship models engage young students to learn about the technology that has been used for different outer space projects and missions. To teach students about space and the explorations that have occurred beyond earth, make a spaceship model. This project provides students with a hands-on learning activity to develop their minds and their creative skills.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Aluminum foil
  • Three plastic straws
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • 4 large marshmallows

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and the circumference of a toilet paper roll with measuring tape. Cut a piece of aluminum foil according to these dimensions.

    • 2

Wrap the foil around the toilet paper roll to fully cover the outside surface. Secure with a piece of tape.

    • 3

Hole punch three holes around the roll on one end, about a half inch from the edge of the roll. Space the holes apart evenly.

    • 4

Fill the roll with three large marshmallows inside the cylinder. Alternatively, substitute the marshmallows with marshmallow-sized foamed pieces to make the spaceship more preservable.

    • 5

Cut out one 3-inch wide circle of aluminum foil. Wrap it around the end of the roll where holes were punched to secure the marshmallows inside. This will serve as the bottom or base of the ship.

    • 6

Attach the three small marshmallows to the three straws, placing one marshmallow on the end of each straw. Alternatively, crazy glue a round foam piece of similar size to the end of each straw. Insert the straws into the cylinder where holes were punched.

    • 7

On the side of the cylinder opposite the straws, make a disc for the spaceship top. Cut an isosceles triangle out of card stock. Make the long sides of the isosceles triangle approximately 2 inches long and the third side approximately 1 inch long. Fold the triangle into a cone and tape where edges meet.

    • 8

Poke the end of the cone halfway through the fourth large marshmallow (or a fourth marshmallow-sized foam piece). Place the marshmallow (or foam piece) inside the toilet paper roll. Stand the ship upright with this end up.
