DIY Simple Planetarium Projector

A planetarium displays the stars and constellations on a domed ceiling. The stars have long been a source of mystery and mapping them has been of great interest to scientists through time. Creating your own simple planetarium projector to use at home is an easy project for children who are just beginning to learn about the stars, constellations and planets.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a hole the size of the flashlight lens in one side of the shoebox. This should be placed directly in the center of one of the longer sides. Measure the length of the shoebox and divide that number in half to find the center point of the shoebox. Trace the flashlight end to be sure your hole will be the correct size for the flashlight. Use the scissors to cut the circle from the side of the shoebox. Inset the flashlight to be sure it fits, but remove it when you've confirmed it is the right size.

    • 2

Measure approximately 1 1/4 inches from each edge of the box, opposite the flashlight hole. Draw a rectangle using the 1 1/4-inch marks as reference. Cut this smaller rectangle out of the side of the shoebox.

    • 3

Using a star chart or other reference, copy the star positions of constellations on to a piece of construction paper using a marker or gel pen. Then, use the compass or other pointy object to poke holes through the construction paper to make the stars. Use larger holes to denote brighter stars and smaller holes for dimmer stars.

    • 4

Tape the construction paper to the inside of the box, covering the rectangle. These can be removed and replaced to demonstrate various constellations.

    • 5

Use a stack of books to prop the flashlight so that it aims directly at a wall. Turn out the lights and turn on the flashlight. The constellation will be projected on the wall.
