How to Make a Model of the Planet Pluto

Pluto holds a unique position in the history of our solar system. Upon its discovery in 1930, Pluto was immediately classified as a planet. Recently, astronomers stripped Pluto of this classification, as many other similar bodies were found in the same vicinity. Now known as a "dwarf planet," Pluto still holds a place in the public imagination as a cold, far-out world. Making a model of this tiny body allows you to exercise some creativity. Pluto is so far away that observers don't yet know exactly what it looks like.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Poke several toothpicks into the bottom of the Styrofoam ball so that it will stand a few inches off the ground.

    • 2

Paint the Styrofoam ball with the spray paint. Hold the model using the toothpicks to keep your hands clean. With the acrylic paint and brush, add details like craters, valleys and mountains. Because Pluto is so far away, scientists know only that it is round and has a reflective surface. Anything else is conjecture, so let your imagination guide you.

    • 3

Set the model aside to dry. Display the finished model of Pluto in an appropriate location, possibly near other solar system models.
