How to Take Photos of the Moon With a Telescope

Taking photos of the moon using a telescope is known as astrophotography. With the proper equipment, astrophotography isn't nearly as complicated as it sounds and can be practiced by anyone with interest. Choose a clear night to practice your astrophotography in a dark area so that you can easily focus on the moon. Check a lunar chart to see when the next full moon is to schedule your astrophotography session.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through a telescope with a magnifier attachment until you can see the moon. Position the telescope so that the view appears how you'd wish for the photograph to turn out and lock it into place.

    • 2

Secure a digital camera on top of a T mount. Adjust the height and angle so that the camera lens is looking directly into the magnifier on the telescope. Look through the camera to see if the view is adjusted properly. When the camera is positioned, lock it into place on the T mount.

    • 3

Adjust the focus of the telescope and/or camera as necessary to create the clearest picture in the camera's lens.

    • 4

Press the button on your camera to take the photograph of the moon.
