How to Use the Stars As a Compass

If you find yourself lost at night and don't know which direction is which, just look up to the sky. You can use the stars to get your bearings and point you in the right direction, if you know what to look for. You only need to be able to identify one constellation to be able to locate which direction is north. From there, as long as you know which direction to head, you'll be able to find your way home.

Instructions

    • 1

Look up at the sky and locate the Big Dipper constellation.

    • 2

Find the two stars at the end of the Big Dipper.

    • 3

Visualize a line about five times the length of the distance between the two stars going straight up from them.

    • 4

Find Polaris, the star straight up from the two end stars of the Big Dipper.

    • 5

Head in the direction that you need to go. South is the opposite direction from Polaris, west is to the left and east is to the right.
