Star Maps With Constellations Named for Greek Myths

Many of the constellations are named for Greek words such as "Pyxis," the Greek word for box, and "Telescopium," the Greek word for telescope. However, only 11 are named for actual Greek myths: Andromeda, Bootes, Cepheus, Cetus, Cygnus, Eridanus, Gemini, Hercules, Orion, Pegasus and Perseus. Many constellations were named centuries ago.
  1. Orion

    • Orion is arguably the most well-known constellation that is named for a Greek myth. It is often referred to as "The Hunter" since Orion was a hunter in Greek mythology. Orion is located on the celestial equator and is one of the most recognizable constellations. It can be seen in the night sky anywhere in the world. There are seven main stars in the Orion constellation.

    Hercules

    • Hercules is a popular Greek character.

Hercules is possibly the most well-known Greek myth figure. The name Hercules, the Roman mythological figure, was adapted from the Greek hero Heracles. The constellation Hercules is the fifth-largest, modern-day constellation out of the 88 constellations in the sky in the 21st century.

    Andromeda and Her Love

    • The Andromeda constellation is in the northern sky and bears the name of a princess in Greek mythology. In the same legend, Perseus was the Greek hero who saved Andromeda from the grips of a sea monster and took her for his own. The constellation Perseus also is in the northern sky and is where the Perseids meteor shower occurs every year.

    Animal Constellations

    • In Greek mythology, Zeus is the Father of gods and men.

The Cygnus constellation lies on the Milky Way plane, and it includes a pattern of stars called the Northern Cross. Cygnus is the Greek work for swan and refers to a character in Greek mythology who was given the body of a swan by Zeus in exchange for saving the life of his best friend. Cetus is another constellation named after a creature in Greek mythology. Cetus was a sea monster in Greek mythology and the word in modern times is taken to mean whale. The Cetus constellation is located in the water region of the sky.

    Constellations Denoting Men's Positions

    • The Bootes constellation is named after a murky figure in Greek mythology; no one is confident of the true representation of Bootes. One legend has Bootes as a plowman who drove oxen with the help of dogs, and another has him depicted as a grape grower. The constellation named after Bootes has seven main stars. Cepheus was the King of Aethiopia in Greek mythology and the constellation that bears its name also has seven main stars.

    Remaining Three Constellations

    • Pegasus is depicted often in Greek mythology.

Eridanus is the name of a constellation with 24 main stars and is the sixth-largest constellation in the modern sky. Eridanus means river, and in Ancient Greek times it meant the Po River. The burning body of Phaeton was said to have been extinguished in the Po River. Pegasus was a winged horse in Greek mythology, arguably the most well-known fantastical creature in tales of Greek lore. The Pegasus constellation has nine main stars. The Gemini constellation is named from the Latin word for twins -- Gemini -- and denotes the relationship between Castor and Pollux, twin brothers in Greek mythology. The constellation has eight main stars.
