How to Draw a New Moon

Because the moon is constantly orbiting the Earth, which constantly orbits around the Sun, different parts of the moon are illuminated by the sun at different periods of time. When the moon crosses between the Earth and the Sun, people on Earth can only view the dark side of the moon -- which makes drawing a new moon fairly simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Black color utensil (pen, marker, crayon, colored pencils)
  • White color utensil (pen, marker, crayon, colored pencils)
  • Protractor

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circular shape. If you want to create a perfect circle shape, use a protractor by pointing the needle at the center point and tracing the pen in a circular motion.

    • 2

Shade the entire inside of the moon with a black coloring utensil, such as a marker, colored pencil or crayon. Because the new moon is not illuminated by the sun, the whole moon should be colored in. Or, if you want the moon's surface to be slightly visible, shade the entire moon in light gray with dark gray patches that represent the moon's crevices.

    • 3

Outline the circle with a white coloring utensil. If your new moon is against a black background, the white outline will add definition to the new moon and separate it from the black background.
