How to Make Up Your Own Constellation

Constellations are groupings of stars. Ancient people saw that some groupings seemed to form a shape. Constellations like Orion, the Big Dipper and Taurus are well-known. Many cultures created their own constellations. Different cultures saw different things in the shapes of the stars. Making your own constellations is a creative exercise that allows you to go through the same process that the ancients did.

Instructions

    • 1

Go outside on a clear night. If you live in the city, you may wish to drive some distance to get away from the light pollution. Alternately, you can look at a star map to see the arrangement of stars.

    • 2

Look up at the stars and allow your eyes to separate the stars into groups. With so many stars in the sky, your eyes want to divide them up.

    • 3

Draw the star groupings on a piece of paper. Use small dots or star shapes to represent each star.

    • 4

Look at your drawing and think about what the shapes remind you of. Ancient people looked at the stars of the Big Dipper and thought it looked like a ladle meant for carrying water.

    • 5

Make up a story about why the object is in the sky. Perhaps it was thrown up there or placed up there for safe keeping.
