How to Assemble a Telescope Lens for Use

Telescopes use reflective lenses to magnify objects in the sky and make them appear larger than they are. Most prosumer-level telescopes use easily identified lenses that simply slip over the optic tube on the top of the scope making for quick and easy set-ups and assembly. Once assembled the telescope is ready to be pointed at a celestial object and brought into focus. Telescopes are a great addition to a star-gazers gear kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the lens with the largest number from the telescope lenses. This is the eyepiece that is used for the viewing of the celestial bodies. Push the lens onto the optic tube at the back of the telescope. The optic tube sticks up and is perpendicular to the main telescope chamber-tube.

    • 2

Remove the lens cap at the end of the telescope chamber-tube. Spray some compressed air onto the lens to rid any debris or dust particles from the lens. You will see a series of screws at the end of the telescope and around the lens. Do not tighten these screws. These screws align the telescope's primary mirror and tightening them will knock the scope out of alignment.

    • 3

Turn the focus dial on the eyepiece lens after sighting an object and directing the telescope to the object. Use the finder scope to align the object with the main eyepiece lens. Focus the eyepiece lens once the finder scope aligns the telescope to the object.
