How to Transfer Lenses for Telescopes

Even the most basic amateur astronomy telescopes provide a clear view of the moon, planets and stars. Sometimes you want more magnification than a standard telescope can provide. The magnification lens on both refractor and reflector telescopes is part of the eyepiece. Amateur astronomers keep a range of eyepiece lenses for viewing different astronomical phenomena. Change the eyepiece lens on a telescope without any tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the eyepiece lens on your reflector or refractor telescope. It's on the top-right of the telescope barrel. The lens is part of the eyepiece device.

    • 2

Unscrew the small silver or black locking pin on the side of the eyepiece component. The lock is designed to be unscrewed by hand.

    • 3

Turn the eyepiece component slightly counter-clockwise and gently pull it from the main barrel. The eyepiece should come away from the socket easily. Leave the lens cap on the eyepiece and place it somewhere safe for storage.

    • 4

Insert the new eyepiece into the socket on the telescope barrel and turn it gently in a clockwise direction. Screw the silver locking pin in a clockwise direction to secure the eyepiece to the telescope barrel.

    • 5

Operate the telescope as normal. Refocus the telescope to take account of the different magnification of the new eyepiece.
