Optex Telescope Instructions

Optex telescopes come in a variety of different formats, from modest terrestrial refractors to larger dobsonian models. The performance of these models depends on temperature, light conditions and skilled manipulation of the telescope. Proper use of the finder scope, eyepiece and mount result in optimal use of Optex telescopes.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the Optex telescope in a dark area when stargazing, protecting against any man-made light from entering the aperture. Use the telescope outside of light-polluted areas and at high altitudes to minimize exposure to artificial light. Reduce temperature-based light distortion by setting up in colder temperatures. Allow the telescope to match the external temperature in cool conditions before viewing to avoid condensation on the primary mirror or lens.

    • 2

Find a terrestrial object in the near distance and point the telescope toward it. Set the eyepiece by slowly turning the focus until the object is clear and centered in the field of view. Use an eyepiece with less magnification to make the process easier.

    • 3

Adjust the finder scope on the Optex telescope to align the landmark image in the smaller scope with the image in the eyepiece. Use a bright star, planet or the moon to align the finderscope only if there is no terrestrial landmark available.

    • 4

Scan the sky using the finder scope to align the main aperture of the telescope with the viewing target. Once the target is centered, swap eyepieces to a different magnification if desired, slowly turning the focus until the target is clear.

    • 5

Increase magnification by using eyepieces with lower focal lengths. Decrease magnification and increase field of view by swapping an eyepiece with a larger focal length. Obtain the exact magnification by dividing the focal length of the Optex telescope with that of the eyepiece.

    • 6

Track celestial objects by gently swiveling the body of the telescope to match the earth's rotation if the Optex telescope is on a dobsonian mount. Lock the axis and rotate the panning controls on altazimuth and equatorial mounts to follow objects with greater precision than dobsonian mounts.
