Instructions for Bushnell Telescopes

Bushnell telescopes survey the night sky, bringing images of planets, stars, constellations, star clusters, and galaxies into the visual range of the viewer. Bushnell telescopes are designed to give amateurs adequate resources to observe well-known stellar phenomena, and the power to examine the night sky with terrific detail. Several models of the Bushnell telescope collection are still in circulation, but the Northstar and Voyager telescope lines are the only two currently in production.

Instructions

  1. Assemble the Bushnell Telescope

    • 1

Attach the computerized navigation system to the telescope. Two bolts included in the package will go through holes in the metal panel connected to the computer. They connect to the two holes on the side of the telescope. They can be tightened with the Allen wrench included in the kit.

    • 2

Attach the telescope to the tripod. The computer mounting attaches to the metal tripod tray with a wing nut included in the package. Connect the tripod legs to the metal tray with the nuts and bolts included in the kit.

    • 3

Adjust the legs of the tripod to the appropriate width and height. Make sure that the telescope is stable, then tighten the nuts to hold the tripod in position.

    • 4

Insert the lowest-powered eyepiece; this is the physically smallest eyepiece. It is labeled "20mm." Always begin viewing with the lowest-powered eyepiece, and increase power for greater detail when a target is in view.

    • 5

Focus the telescope. Aim the telescope tube at a target approximately 200 yards away. Adjust the focus until the tube is extended as far as possible. Look through the eyepiece and focus inward until the object comes into sharp focus.

    • 6

Insert a computer battery. On the rear side of the computer interface there is a battery door. Remove this battery door and insert a 9-volt battery, then replace the battery door.

    • 7

Press the "Power" button to activate the computer.

    Set Up the Bushnell Computer

    • 8

Point the telescope due north. Either use a compass to find due north or find the North star. If you see the big dipper, the two stars on the spoon end point directly at the north star. Point the telescope in the direction of the North star, but parallel with the ground.

    • 9

Turn on the Bushnell computer. Press the On/Off button located on the base of the computer. The name of the telescope and the software model number will scroll across the screen. When it is done, the computer will display the default screen.

    • 10

Select "Align Earth" from the default menu. It will already be flashing, so simply press the "Go" button, which is located between the four directional buttons on the computer.

    • 11

Set the time and date. When the "Align Earth" mode is selected, the telescope requests the time. Use the arrow keys to set the time in 12-hour mode. Press "Go," then use the up and down arrows to set the time zone. Press "Go" again when finished. Once the time is set, the computer will request the date. Use the same process to set the date.

    • 12

Configure the computer's location settings. The computer will now flash the word "City." Press "Go" to enter the location settings. The computer will display the word "Country." Below "Country," "US" will be flashing. Use the up and down arrows to select the country. Based on the country selected, the computer will request a state and city. If your city is not listed, select the closest option.

    • 13

Align the computer. The computer will display the message pertaining to the location of a star that it will use for alignment purposes. Press "Go." The computer will automatically move the telescope to the relative location of a star. Look through the telescope --- the brightest thing you will see is the alignment star. Move the telescope so this star is in the center of the display, then press "Enter." Repeat this process to align the second star.

    Explore with the Bushnell Telescope

    • 14

Select "Explore" from the main menu. If you have just completed "Earth Align," Explore will already be flashing. If it is not flashing, use the up and down arrows to until you see "Explore" flashing on the menu, then press "Go."

    • 15

Select the type of item you would like to explore. Options include planets, stars, and galaxies. By default, "PLA" (planets) will be flashing. When you have selected the type of item you would like to explore, press "Go." The first option for that type will flash on the screen.

    • 16

Select the celestial body to explore. Depending on the selection from the previous step, there will be a list of planets, stars, or galaxies to choose from. Use the up and down arrows to explore the options available. Once you've decided which body to explore, press "Enter." The telescope will automatically point at the body selected.

    • 17

Focus the telescope. Experiment with different lenses and different focus settings.
