How to Make a Solar Telescope

Our sun is a star, one of 100 billion in our Milky Way galaxy. The energy from the sun is created by nuclear reactions inside it, and eruptions on the sun can be seen as flares and sunspots. While you should never look directly at the sun with a telescope, unless you have special filters, you can easily make a pinhole camera to project its image onto a piece of paper.

Things You'll Need

  • Two pieces of heavy paper
  • Pin or needle

Instructions

    • 1

Push your pin through the center of one of the pieces of heavy paper. Leave the other paper whole.

    • 2

Wait for a sunny day and go outside with your two pieces of paper. Hold the paper with the pinhole at the sun, but do not look directly at the sun.

    • 3

Find the image of the sun that is created by the pinhole, and place the other paper in its path to capture it. You may need to move the whole paper around to find the best image.
