Instructions for a Galileo Telescope

One of the central instruments ever created for scientific study, the telescope was an invention refined by noted pioneer of early astronomy Galileo Galilei. Revealing a heliocentric, or sun-centered, universe, the telescope helped to change the worldview of the early 17th century. Models of Galileo's early telescope have been refined and now can be purchased for individual use.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all parts from the box and identify them: the telescope with mount attachment, the preassembled tripod, counter weight shafts, counter weights, the Mars Eye finder, three eyepieces (6mm, 20mm, and 32mm), the adapter, the accessory tray, and the CD-ROM.

    • 2

Extend the tripod legs equally and tighten the locking knobs.

    • 3

Attach the telescope and mount to the tripod. Do not overtighten. The telescope should be tilted at a slight angle.

    • 4

Attach the accessory tray. Spread the tripod legs apart so the tray will fit underneath. Place the tray's hook over the holder's metal rod and push down. Tighten the holder's locking knob to hold the accessory tray in place.

    • 5

Loosen the screws on the Mars Eye finder and slide it onto the bracket. Tighten the attachment screws.

    • 6

Balance the main tube of the telescope by moving it slightly back and forth on the tripod. Move the counter weights for additional balancing.

    • 7

Attach the slow-motion knob to the shaft of the slow-motion control on the tripod.

    • 8

Remove the lens caps when the telescope is in use, and replace them when not in use. This will keep the telescope's optics clean.
