As of September 2010, the last planetary alignment was on May 5, 2000. These phenomena occur about every 50 to 100 years, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The next alignment is predicted for September 8, 2040.
  1. Definition

    • "Planetary alignment" does not mean that all of the planets are lined up in a row. It means that some or most of the planets in the solar system are on the same side of the sun.

    Fun Fact

    • The odds of all nine planets lining up in a row are one in 8.6 billion trillion trillion trillion--8.6 followed by 45 zeros. This number is larger than the estimated age (in years) of the universe.

    Misconception

    • Whenever a planetary alignment is due, stories and rumors about the end of the world appear, but numerous planetary alignments have occurred since the human race began.
