An Elliptical Galaxy Contains Mostly What Kind of Stars?

Galaxies can be divided into four basic types on the basis of their shape: elliptical, spiral, lenticular and irregular. The shape of a galaxy is in a large part influenced by its formation and its history, and different shapes of galaxies contain different star types, according to Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
  1. Shape

    • Elliptical galaxies are spherical, whereas spiral and lenticular galaxies are flatter. Elliptical galaxies have long been thought to be older galaxies, Sloan Digital Sky Survey says, and are composed primarily of older stars.

    Composition

    • Elliptical galaxies have less interstellar gas and dust than other galaxies, according to dictionary.com. Since these are the raw materials by which stars are formed, most of the stars in an elliptical galaxy are older, red stars, says Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

    Red Stars

    • Young stars tend to be small and yellow, or large and blue. As stars age, they expand and cool, and become either red giants or red supergiants. These red stars are the type primarily found in elliptical galaxies.
