Distance
The Royal Astronomy Society of New Zealand says that Sirius is 8.6 light years away from the Earth. Even though this is a great distance, Sirius is still one of the five closest stars to the sun.
Time Frame
Sirius appears low in the northern sky during winter months, according to the Royal Astronomy Society of New Zealand. Observers in the southern hemisphere spot it high in the sky in the early months of each year.
Location
Sirius is located in the constellation Canis Major. To find it, Pedro Braganca at Space.com recommends finding Orion's three-star belt. Sirius is 20 degrees southwest of the belt.
Considerations
Sirius has a small companion star beside it named Sirius B. You will need a telescope to spot it, as the brightness of Sirius prevents humans from seeing Sirius B with the naked eye.
