How to Make a Wooden Tripod for a Telescope

Extend one leg of your metal tripod outwards. Record the exact measurements of the leg, using a measuring tape.

Remove the lug nuts from either side of the metal legs by turning them with the jaws of your pliers. Use your screwdriver to unscrew the three metal legs of your tripod. Set the screws and nuts aside for later use.

Place your 2-by-4 wood on a flat surface. Cut the wood using your miter saw to create your tripod legs. Make sure that the length of the tripod legs matches that of the metal legs in Step 1. Cut from one side of the wood block to taper to the same width as the original metal leg.

Use your rough sandpaper to sand the ends of your three wooden legs. Sand the sides of the blocks of wood where they were tapered. Set the tapered end of one of your wood blocks against one of the tripod legs that are attached to your telescope.

Drill one of the two holes found at the end of your tripod leg using your electric driller. Drill through the block of wood against the tripod leg and repeat the same step for the other hole in your wood block. Repeat the same step with your other two wood blocks.

Line up the two holes at the end of your wood block with the holes in your telescope mount. Insert the old screws into the holes, allowing them to go through the block of wood as well as the holes in your telescope mount.

Screw back the lug nuts at the ends of both screws using your fingers. Use your pliers to tighten the grip of the lug nuts. Do the same step for the other two wood blocks and sets of holes.

Extend the legs of your new wooden tripod and mount them on the floor.
