Interactive Moon Phase Games

Moon phase games are useful for refreshing your mind about the moon phase cycle. As the moon looms over us in the night sky, it goes through different phases on a monthly cycle. To be sure you can identify these phases at any time, challenge yourself with some different games so you can attain greater knowledge about the phases of the moon.
  1. Moon Phase Flash Cards

    • The online game Moon Phases--Definitions and Pictures from the Quia website uses Java to present interactive flash cards about the phases of the moon. When the game starts, it randomly presents a card with either a picture and a fact about the moon phase or the name of the moon phase. To find the answer, a player clicks on the card to see the answer. On the right side of the flash cards, a player has some options to "Try again later," "Remove card," or "Restart." Trying again simply skips the current flash card but keeps it in the pile so a player can come back to it. Removing a card removes a flash card from the set of eight flash cards. Restarting the game resets the game as if a player is using it for the first time.

    Moon Phases from Space Game

    • The game Moon Phases from Space can be found on the Purpose Games website. The purpose of this online game is to identify the moon phases as if you were in space. When a player presses "Start," a timer starts to see how many phases can be identified. The game displays a name of the moon phase where a player has to identify the phase by clicking the appropriate position of the moon phase in the game. The game also displays arrows to show which way the moon travels and where the sun's light is coming from to determine the appropriate moon phase. The game notifies a player when the wrong phase is selected and provides a hint after a few consecutive missed tries.

    Moon Phase Ordering Game

    • Ordering Moon Phases can be found on the Quia website. This online game is geared toward grade-school students but can be played by any age group. The game asks a player to put the phases of the moon in order starting and ending with the new moon. A box to the left of each phase is available so a player can type the number of the phase. For example, a player types "1" in the box for the first new moon. When a player is finished entering the answers, there are three different options. These options are "Reorder answers," "Check answers," and "I give up! Show me the answers." When a player checks answers, a green check will appear next to each correct answer, and a red X will appear next to each incorrect answer.
