How to Make a Telescope Piggyback Mount

Piggyback mounts for your telescope can offer you a way to take photos of the sky. With some simple tools and parts, you can make your own mount. The mount will work great with any 35mm or digital camera.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-by-4 board
  • Table saw
  • Hose clamp
  • Wing nut
  • 1/4-inch screw

Instructions

      Cut your 2-by-4 into 3 1/2-inch square block with a table saw. Cut out the middle of the block to fit your telescope.

      Drill a 1/4-inch diameter hole down the center of the block. Place your screw and wing nut into that hole, making sure the screw is long enough to leave some threads near the top for the camera to go on.

      Mount your hose clamp to the telescope by drilling two holes at the end of the clamp and screwing these holes into the wood block.

      Tighten it around your telescope's optical tube, making sure the mount doesn't slide off.

      Place your camera on the threads.
