Instructions
Locate the current time on the star locator. The times are written in a circle around the edge of the locator and do not move.
Turn the wheel of the star locator until the date aligns with the current time. The month and day should line up with the arrow or line representing the time. For example, if it is December 5th at midnight, the number 5 underneath December should be above the arrow labeled "Midnight."
Open your compass and hold it flat in the palm of your hand. Wait for it to stop spinning and see which direction is north. Turn to face north. Position your star locator so the section labeled "North" is pointing toward the north.
Turn so your back is to the north and you are looking south. Hold the star locator straight up above your head so, in this upside down position, the arrow is pointing behind you and indicating where north is.
Pick a constellation shown on the star locator. For easy reference, pick a constellation that is right above you on the star locator. Move the locator slightly so you can see the sky and try to find that constellation. It should be close to where it was located on your star locator when you held it up.
Adjust your position until the stars in the sky match the stars on the star locator when held above your head. Find the specific star or constellation you are looking for on the star locator and then look in that area of the sky to see it. If you cannot find it on the star locator, then you cannot see it at the current time from your position.
