What Are the Functions of the Hubble Telescope?

Earth̵7;s atmosphere interferes with the operation of telescopes. The Hubble Space Telescope is positioned above the atmosphere and therefore can make observations that are impossible from the ground.
  1. Accuracy

    • The view from the Hubble Telescope is at a very high resolution̵2;more than 10 times clearer than a ground-based telescope. This means astronomers can use it to observe details of distant objects.

    Fine Measurements

    • Hubble̵7;s fine guidance sensors and its spectrographs can be used to take precise measurements about the location, motion, and composition of distant objects.

    Distant Galaxies

    • Radiation from distant galaxies arrives at Earth primarily in the infrared spectrum. Hubble carries instruments to detect this radiation.

    Detecting the Unseen

    • Hubble can ̶0;see̶1; many things that cannot be observed by most telescopes. For example it can:

? View infrared radiation that penetrates interstellar dust.
? Detect black holes with its spectrographs.
? Find signs of dark matter with high-resolution images.

    The Nature of the Universe

    • The Hubble Telescope̵7;s wide variety of observations supply key information on how the universe began and developed. For example, Hubble played a major role in showing that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate.
