How to Make a Planisphere

A planisphere is a star gazing guide that consists of a number of flat discs that slide around on top of each other and can be coordinated to calculate star distances. The name planisphere derives from the fact that the device is a flat "plane" representation of space or the celestial "sphere." This comprehensive star chart is easily made using a template.

Instructions

  1. Process

    • 1

Begin by determining which of the many online planisphere templates to use and printing it out onto regular copy paper. It is a good idea to make two copies just in case of tearing or folding issues.

    • 2

Check whether any part of the chosen template needs to be transferred onto transparency paper and do this by placing the transparency sheet in the photocopier and making a copy. Some templates suggest printing the top plate on a transparency so the plates below are clearly visible. Other templates are designed so that all three plates are visible at one time.

    • 3

Carefully trim the paper so the templates become circular discs. Most templates indicate where to cut. If not, the outermost line is an appropriate guide.

    • 4

Back the bottom disc with thick card to create a sturdier planisphere. Use white school glue and push excess adhesive out to the edges for blotting by smoothing a flat plastic ruler across the top of the paper template.

    • 5

Cover the remaining discs with clear-plastic sheet protectors cut to the same size as the discs. These should not be glued to the disc; rather, they should lie directly on top. This will make the discs slide against each other in a smooth manner.

    • 6

Pierce the center of all three discs with a paper hole punch or the tip of a pair of sharp scissors, creating a small hole. The holes should line up accurately and are best if produced simultaneously. Be sure to cut a hole in any accompanying plastic sheets.

    • 7

Push a brass fastener through the center holes of each disc to hold together. Slide and turn the discs against each other to check for ease of manipulation and begin enjoying your planisphere.
