Naming a star after someone is a nifty gift. It's got romantic overtones, certainly, but it can also provide a compelling legacy for the matriarch in the family or a couple's first born. There are several companies that will offer the promise of naming a particular star after someone. For a fee, you'll get an official certificate with the location of the star and possibly get a copy of a registry with your name and designated star recorded in it. You need to be aware, however, that these are novelty purchases only and have no official capacity. So far, the moon and the stars can't be sold at any price.

  Browse online for a company that offers to name stars. The International Star Registry has been in business for 30 years and offers a certificate with the name of your choice as well as coordinates to the star for telescope viewing.

  Choose a name for the star. This can be anything you like. You can name the star after your fiancee, a beloved family member, a recently deceased pet or even your favorite television actor.

  Purchase your star. Make sure the online company you have chosen is reputable. Do they have a contact number and an email address? How long have they been in business? Is their online payment system secure? It's always a good idea to be thorough when evaluating an online company before sending payment.
