How to Clean a Telescope

Cleaning a telescope is a very delicate task that should not be done by a novice. Unless the optics and mirrors of the telescope have become extremely dirty, rendering it unusable, you will want to hold off on any cleaning. The concern with cleaning a telescope is that you may use a product that will scratch or damage the device.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Blow any loose dust and dirt off of the telescope using a canned air duster. Remove dust from the mirrors, lenses and eyepiece of the telescope with this product.

    • 2

Rinse off the mirrors of the telescope with lukewarm water. Then gently wipe cotton balls soaked in a mild detergent and water mixture over the surface of the mirrors. Use distilled water to rinse off the cleaning solution from the mirrors.

    • 3

Allow the mirrors to dry on paper towels and do not replace them on the device until they are completely dried.

    • 4

Clean the front of your objective lens with a glass cleaner solution. Do not remove it from the cell since this will ruin the telescope. To clean the exposed area of the objective lens, use new cotton balls soaked in an equal mixture of glass cleaner and water. Place delicate pressure over the area until the cotton balls no longer pick up dirt. Dry the lens with clean cotton balls.

Use the glass cleaner and water mixture to clean the eyepiece of the telescope as well. To access the small crevices, use a cotton swab instead of cotton balls.
