Better yet, build several, sharing both the fun of an enjoyable craft activity and a good learning experience with your kids. After all, there is no lack of constellations up there! Here's how it's done.

  1. How to Make a Cardboard Stargazer

    • 1

Trace the rim of a toilet paper roll onto black construction paper with a lead pencil. Remove the toilet paper roll.

    • 2

Inside the circle, use the pencil to draw the constellation of your choice. Be sure to consider the size of the various stars making up the constellation--some are large, some are small, and some are very, very tiny. Draw your dots accordingly.

    • 3

Use a pin to poke holes where you've just drawn stars. For larger stars, lightly wiggle the pin around to create a larger hole. For tiny ones, gently prick a slight hole into the paper.

    • 4

Draw another circle around the tracing of the toilet paper roll's rim, 1 inch further out on all sides. You should now have two concentric circles--a large one, and a smaller one with the constellation drawn inside it. Use scissors to cut along the line of the larger circle.

    • 5

Stand the toilet paper roll up. Place the rim-traced circle onto the top rim of the toilet paper roll. Fold down the excess 1 inch of paper on all sides, then use a rubber band to firmly hold the paper it in place.

    • 6

In a dark room, shine a small flashlight into the open end of the toilet paper roll, pointing the end with the constellation straight up. Your stargazer will project the constellation onto the ceiling.
