How to Tell if The Moon is Waning or Waxing

The moon has many phases, so it can be difficult to tell what phase it is in based on a single observation. There is an easy way to tell if the moon is waning (receding from the full moon) or waxing (increasing to the full moon).

Instructions

    • 1

Find the moon in the sky.

    • 2

Hold up your hands so the moon's curve fits in the natural curve of one of your hands, using your first finger and thumb to form a "C" shape. Unless it is full or close to being full, the curve of the moon will only match one of your hands.

    • 3

Use the the hand the moon's curve fits into to know if it is waning or waxing. If the curve of the moon fits into your left hand, the moon is waning. If the curve of the moon fits into your right hand, the moon is waxing.
