Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure four lengths of 16 inches each on one of the 2-by-2-by-8-foot boards. These will be the legs of the stand. Mark off each length and double check the measurements, there will not be enough wood stock from the two boards for over cuts. Now measure another 20-inch length on the same board. Set the board aside.
Measure two 3- inch lengths for the front and back rails of the stand on the other 2-by-2-by-8-foot board. Using 36 inches will make room for two hives per stand a small air space between them. Double check the measurements again, and also measure out another 20-inch piece on the remainder of this board. The two 20-inch pieces will be the side rails.
Cut all the pieces from the two boards with the measurements you made, using a hand saw or table saw.
Lay out the two 20-inch side rail pieces on your work surface. These will be on the right and left, laying vertically. Now place the two 36-inch front and back rail pieces horizontally across the side rails, with the ends of the front and back rails on top of the ends of the side rails. This will look like a rectangle. Lay the carpenter's square against the corners and line the edges of the boards up so they are even.
Drill two pilot holes for the screws down through the front and back rails on each corner where they lay across the side rails. Drill all the way through the front and back rails, and down into the side rails another 1/2-inch. A 9/32 drill bit will make the correct size pre-drilled hole for a 2 1/2-inch wood screw.
Spread glue between the two boards at each corner. Square them up with the carpenter's square again after the glue is applied. Screw a wood screw into each pilot hole you drilled on the corners using the drill and a driver bit, or use a cordless screw driver.
Set one of the four 16-inch legs on the inside of each corner of the rectangular frame. Push it in place so that it is set right in the corner. Drill two pilot holes in each leg to mount them to the frame by drilling through the legs and into the side rails 1/2-inch with the 9/32 drill bit.
Glue the spaces where the leg boards meet the rails of the frame.
Screw the legs in place with the wood screws. Allow the glue to dry before use. To set up, turn the stand right side up so the legs are down, and set the hives on the top of the rectangular portion of the stand. The open design allows air flow.
