How to Find Mock Orange for Spiders

To keep away spiders and other insect pests, some people recommend using what are commonly called mock oranges. While this isn't a surefire method, researchers have found chemical compounds within the fruit that repel some insects. When looking for mock oranges it is important to know that the correct name for the fruit is hedgeapple or Osage orange, as it comes from the Osage orange tree. Other names for the fruit include hedge balls, horse apples and green brains.

     Contact local farmers and ask if they currently grow hedgeapples or Osage oranges. Some farmers may grow the trees as a natural barrier or fence. Ask to purchase unused fruit.

     Check at the local farmer's market during the Spring and Summer for hedgeapples. Farmer's markets are great places to find fruits not readily available at the grocery store.
