How to Treat Sycamore Tussock Moths

Sycamore tussock moth caterpillars are abundant in the springtime and can become annoying pests in your home or backyard. Caterpillars hatch from overwintering eggs around early March and mature to spin cocoons in early April when they emerge as moths. Sometimes caterpillars can spin their hardened cocoons on outdoor furniture or your home's foundation. If you discover sycamore tussock moths around your home, treat them immediately before an infestation occurs.

Instructions

    • 1

Search your home's foundation for climbing caterpillars. If you discover any, sweep them up with a broom and put them in a bucket of soapy water to kill them.

    • 2

Remove sycamore tussock moth cocoons with a pair of tweezers. Slip the tweezers between the cocoon and the surface it is attached to, and gently pull it off. Put the cocoons in the bucket of soapy water.

    • 3

Spray some carbaryl insecticide around bushes, shrubs, and small trees to treat sycamore moths. Be sure to read and follow the directions on the label carefully before using.

    • 4

Purchase an insect strip and place it around the trunk of each tree in your yard. The strips will prevent caterpillars from climbing up the tree and feeding on its leaves.

    • 5

Seal any cracks or crevices in your home's foundation with caulk to keep sycamore tussock moths out of your home. Repair any tears in window or door screens to eliminate possible entry points.
