How to Tell the Gender of a Ten-Lined June Beetle

Ten-lined June beetles (Polyphylla decemlineata) fly from June to August, a time that is also the breeding season. These beetles show visible gender differences. To tell whether an individual is a male or a female, it helps to catch and temporarily confine the beetle to get a closer look.

Instructions

    • 1

Print pictures of the male and female beetles, available online, so as to have a visual reference. Choose pictures that show the antennae of each insect clearly. These pictures do not need to be in color.

    • 2

Note whether the beetle is attracted to lights. A ten-lined June beetle flying around a lamp in the evening is most likely to be a male.

    • 3

Catch the beetle in a net and transfer it to a transparent glass or plastic tub.

    • 4

Examine the beetle's antennae. The antennae of the male ten-lined June beetle are significantly larger than those of the female. On the male they look like thick, crooked clubs. On the female, they are relatively small, thin and unobtrusive.
