How to Build Steam

Steam is one form of water. When liquid water molecules move fast enough, they spread out and the liquid water expands. Steam is the gaseous form of water. Steam is invisible. Condensed water vapor forms when steam cools and tiny droplets of water remain suspended in the air. Steam has many uses in the world. Steam powers turbines and generates electricity. Heating systems force steam through pipes for radiant heat. Steam cooks food and sterilizes surfaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from the pressure cooker. The lid of the pressure cooker seals tightly to the body of the pot. Different types of pressure cookers have different locking systems. A vent in the top of the pot releases the built up steam.

    • 2

Fill the pressure cooker with a quart of water.

    • 3

Place the lid on the pot.

    • 4

Put the pot on the heat source. Ignite the heat source.

    • 5

Watch the pot until the steam builds up enough to force water vapor out of the vent.

    • 6

Allow the pot to cool before opening the pressure cooker.
