Spiders That Have an Hour Glass That Are Not Black Widows

Black widows are well known for their venom and their appearance. These spiders have a distinctive red or orange hourglass shape on their jet-black bodies. This makes them extremely recognizable. However, several other common spiders have similar markings. Still, they can be told apart with some cautious observation.
  1. Brown Recluse

    • Brown spiders have a black fiddle marking similar to a black widow's hourglass.

The brown recluse, also known as the fiddleback spider, the violin spider or simply recluse, is a small brown spider native to the midwestern United States down to the gulf. Sporadically they appear outside their range when accidentally transported by humans. Their bite is potentially dangerous, but it can range from a small red spot that goes away on its own to scarring. The bite is usually painful. This spider has a black or dark brown "violin" shaped marking similar to a black widow's hourglass.

    Arizona Brown Spider

    • The Arizona recluse is similar to the brown recluse but is found in the desert regions.

The Arizona brown spider or desert recluse is closely related to the better-known brown recluse. Their range is distinct, including the American southwest. Their bite is just as serious as the regular brown recluse. Their violin marking are slightly less pronounced, but they still posses them. These violin markings are like a dark version of the black widow's hourglass.

    Redback Spider

    • Redback spiders rely on their webs to catch food.

The redback spider is almost identical to the black widow, down to the bright red hourglass. They are very closely related to the American black widow, but are found in Australia. They are so similar that they were once believed to be the same species, but have since been reclassified. As with the black widow, their bite is extremely. painful. However, a successful antivenom has been developed and implemented. Bites tend to happen when humans accidentally disturb this spider's nest.

    Katipo

    • The Katipo is another relative of the black widow.

The Katipo is another spider from the same genus as the black widow and the redback spider. This species is native to New Zealand. It has a red stripe on the top of its abdomen and a red hourglass on the underside. Its name is the Maori word for "night-stinger." Their bites are rare, but painful. There has not been a documented death from this spider in over 100 years.
