Insects That Look Like Spiders

Spiders are part of the Arachnida family, so they are not insects. There are several key distinctions between insects and spiders. The most noticeable distinction is the legs. Spiders have eight legs and insects have six legs. Also, spiders do not have antennas and insects have two. Despite these differences, it it not uncommon for you to find an insect that looks like a spider.
  1. Cave Crickets

    • Cave crickets are usually found in caves or in damp cool areas. They are also known as a camel cricket or a spider cricket. Cave crickets have large hind legs so they can jump far and high. Cave crickets typically are not found inside of homes, but if they do make it inside the home they are likely to be found in a basement or a crawlspace. If they do infest your home, they can cause damage to your clothing and linens.

    Crane Fly

    • Crane flies may be mistaken for a wasp, mosquitoes or a spider. They are usually red, yellow or black. Their average size is around .1 to 2.3 inches. Crane flies like to hang out in woodlands that are wet and mossy. In some countries other than the United States, the crane fly is known as a daddy long leg.

    Assassin Bugs

    • There are many different kinds of assassin bugs, but whatever the kind, they look vicious. Assassin bugs sometimes can be mistaken for a spider. Assassin bugs are great for getting rid of garden bugs like caterpillars, beetles, flies and mosquitoes. They wait for their prey and then inject them with toxins through their beak. They have a painful bite, so use caution when you find one.

    Water Striders

    • Water striders are sometimes known as water bugs. They resemble spiders on the top of the water. Some of the water striders have wings, while others are wingless. Water striders hang out on ponds and lakes. They like to be near water that is slow moving. They typically eat insects that are near the water's surface. They are not considered a pest and cause no harm to humans.
