What Are White Roaches?

There is no such thing as an albino roach. If you come across a white roach you have encountered it when it has outgrown its exterior shell. This is called molting. The roach has gotten too large for its exoskeleton. As a result, the exterior shell splits open.
  1. Emergence

    • The roach emerges and its skin is totally white with the exception of its eyes. If you think you have come across something very unusual and capture the white or albino roach to show off, you may find out that the roach is brown or black within a few hours.

    Molting

    • When a roach undergoes molting it recedes deeper in cabinets and walls for safety, because it's vulnerable during this period. After breaking out of its exterior shell, the roach stays in the dark for a few hours, allowing its body to fill up with fluids. During this process, color is pumped back into the white shell that then turns dark.

    Prolific Breeders

    • The most prolific breeder among cockroaches is the German cockroach. The female lives as long as six months and she carries 30 to 40 eggs at one time. An egg can grow to adulthood in six weeks and during this period the roach molts six times. The Oriental cockroach also has a fast breeding cycle. The females live up to two years and deposit egg sacs that contain 16 eggs and do so up to 18 times during their lives. The incubation period is a month or two and the hatchling becomes an adult within12 months. During that time, the roach molts seven times.

    Asthma

    • Cockroaches molt regularly. When they do, the discarded skin gets into the air and can cause serious asthmatic reactions as well as bronchial problems, according to Termite.com.
