Common Southwestern Cockroaches

Cockroaches have always been considered a pest because of the numerous disadvantages they bring to any home they inhabit. They harbor harmful microorganisms that may cause illnesses if they touch food and kitchen utensils. If you want to get rid of cockroaches in your home and you live in the southwestern U.S., it is important to get to know the pests specific to your region before you prepare to take them out.
  1. American Cockroach

    • With a Latin name of Periplaneta Americana, this cockroach is a pest known by various names such as the flying water bug and the water bug. It shows off a reddish-brown hue with wings and light, distinct markings found on the thorax. Normally, American cockroaches live in warm, damp habitats including sewers, boiler rooms, basements, steam tunnels and crawl spaces. They are also quite conspicuous in daytime unlike other cockroach species. These cockroaches can extend up to 2 inches in length and are omnivorous. Nevertheless, they are also popular as scavengers, eating numerous things human beings don't.

    Oriental Cockroach

    • Also called the black beetle or the shad roach, this cockroach is known as Blatta orientalis as its Latin name. It is typically dark brown and may grow to 1 inch in length. The oriental cockroach is often found living outdoors in dog houses, sheds, firewood and leaf litter. They are fond of eating sewage waste, garbage and decaying organic things, though they have a preference for starches.

    German Cockroach

    • Often called the croton bug, it also has the Latin name of Blatella Germanica. This cockroach can grow up to 5/8 inch in length, with wings that they don't use. They are usually light to medium brown in color. They have dark, longitudinal streaks found behind their heads called the Prothorax. The German cockroach is fond of places teeming with warmth, moisture and food. They are especially fond of sweet and floury foods, although they are also scavengers who eat everything. They are usually found in supermarkets, homes, restaurants and other homey places. You can often find this cockroach in places where people eat, drink or prepare food.

    Extermination

    • There are numerous ways to exterminate cockroaches. You can use poison and bait, depending on your own preferences. If you don't want to face the cockroaches yourself, you can also call an exterminator to get rid of the problem for you.
