How to Kill & Display Grasshoppers

Insect collecting has fascinated children and adults for generations. When collecting and displaying insects, it is important to take the proper steps to ensure that no damage is done to the specimen. This is especially important in the case of grasshoppers, as they are large enough to allow for real close-up viewing. The supplies required are available online and in specialty shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Capture a grasshopper in a bug net. The larger the grasshopper, the more impressive the display.

    • 2

Transfer the grasshopper to a clean baby food jar.

    • 3

Place the jar in the freezer for three to four hours. This humanely kills the grasshopper.

    • 4

Remove the grasshopper from the jar with forceps and let it sit for five minutes to begin approaching room temperature.

    • 5

Run an insect pin through the grasshopper's thorax, slightly off-center between the middle and hind legs, leaving 1/4 inch extending from the front. This serves as a handle, allowing the grasshopper to be mounted without it being touched.

    • 6

Push the pin into the foam base of an insect display box.

    • 7

Label the grasshopper with the location and date that it was captured, and its common and scientific names. Print the label in a small font and mount it below the grasshopper using double-stick tape.
