Tan Jumping Spider
Tan jumping spiders are the most common white spiders commonly found in Michigan. Instead of creating webs, the tan jumping spider jumps to surprise and capture its prey. The spider grows 10 to 13 mm long, and is known for being friendly toward humans, though it will bite if threatened. The spider can also be tan, black or gray in color.
Banded Garden Spider
The banded garden spider can also be found in Michigan, and is named for its distinctive white bands that cover its legs. The spider has long legs, and its body grows up to 6 mm long. The banded garden spider is known for building webs between plants in gardens and waiting to capture prey. It will bite humans if threatened, but its bite is harmless.
Trashline Orb Weaver
The trashline orb weaver spider is not a species of white spider often found in Michigan, but it is commonly found as close as Illinois and Indiana. The spider is named for its special type of web that may be intended to deter birds or lure prey, but also collects pieces of floating debris. The spider ultimately hides in the debris. The spider can be found in grasslands and can also be colored brown or black. Bites from trashline orb weavers are uncommon and harmless.
Golden Silk Orb Weaver
The golden silk orb weaver is another white spider that can be found in the U.S., though not typically in Michigan. It is more commonly found in southern states, but spiders can be transported to Michigan as stow aways in shipments. Female golden silk orb weavers can grow up to 3 inches long, and the species can commonly be found in shaded or swampy areas. It builds it webs at an incline and waits for prey in the center of the web. The spider can also be found in orange, yellow, black or brown.
