How to Feed Honey Bees Spearmint & Lemongrass

Spearmint and lemongrass oils benefit bees. In 2006, James Amrine, an expert on mites, teamed with beekeeper Bob Noel to find organic ways to control tracheal and varroa mite infestations. Their research found specific essential oils boost bees' immune systems. In addition, the oils cling to the bees' bodies, making it difficult for mites to attach to bees. Because the essential oils easily separate from sugar syrup, they created a special mixture of the essential oils and lecithin called Honey-B-Healthy, which does not separate.

Instructions

  1. Making Food for Bees

    • 1

Purchase a bottle of Honey-B-Healthy. Find the dealer nearest you by visiting honeybhealthy.com and clicking dealer locator. If there is no dealer in your area, you must purchase it online. A 16-ounce bottle of Honey-B-Healthy sells for less than $25.

    • 2

Make a simple sugar syrup. Measure 3 cups granulated sugar into a saucepan. Add 3 cups water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Stir with a metal spoon until the sugar granules dissolve. Remove from heat and cool. You'll have 4 cups of sugar syrup. Transfer the syrup to a quart glass container.

    • 3

Measure 2 tsp. Honey-B-Healthy, and add to the cooled sugar syrup. Place the lid on the container. Shake well.

    • 4

Pour a small amount of the sugar syrup onto the brood frames. Store any remaining mixture in the refrigerator to inhibit mold growth until the next feeding.

Making a Spray for Bees and the Hive

    • 5

Wash a spray bottle with hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly.

    • 6

Follow Steps 1 and 2 above to acquire Honey-B-Healthy and make the sugar syrup.

    • 7

Add 4 tsp. Honey-B-Healthy to the sugar syrup. Place the lid on the glass container, and shake well.

    • 8

Pour the sugar mixture into the sterile spray bottle. Store the mixture in the refrigerator to prevent mold growth.

    • 9
As you lift out each frame, coat the bees and frame with the mixture.

Spray irritated bees with the mixture as you open the top of the hive. Spray the brood frames and bees on these frames to make sure every bee receives a treatment.
