Black & Yellow Spiders in Northeast Ohio

Most spiders found in Ohio are harmless to humans. Although nearly all spiders have venom, their venom is usually not toxic to humans. There are a few exceptions: the black widow and the brown recluse are poisonous to humans and found in Ohio. The black and yellow garden spider is one very common spider found in northeastern Ohio, and there are a few other brightly colored spiders found in this region as well.
  1. Black And Yellow Garden Spider

    • The black and yellow garden spider, also known as a "corn spider," is an orb web spider. Its venom is not dangerous to humans, but it will bite if it feels threatened. Its legs are black with some red close to the body. The body has black and yellow markings on either side. And as the name implies, it can be found in a garden area near plants and flowers.

    Arrowshaped Micrathena

    • This species is not dangerous to humans either. It has three pairs of pointed tubercles that create a triangle shape. The tips are black with red near the yellow stomach. The females have spines on the abdomen. These spiders can be found in a web in the woods.

    Banded Garden Spider

    • The banded garden spider can vary in size but is similar to its cousin, the black and yellow garden spider. Both spiders hang in their webs with their heads down. The underside of the spider is mostly black. Its legs are black and yellow striped. It has lines across their back that are white or yellow also.

    Barn Funnel Weaver

    • This species is found in most of the United States in barns, sheds, around doorways and windows or under rocks. They are reddish-brown with yellow hairs. The abdomen can be gray, brown or black. This species reportedly may live up to seven years. There are no reported instances of a reaction to a barn funnel weaver bite.
