How to Teach the Migration of Bees to Preschoolers

Springtime is the best time to tell preschoolers about bees. During spring, children are more likely to see the bees buzzing around and pollinating flowers. Since bees are popular insects in children's books, children are introduced to the concept of bees and their honey-making at a young age. Preschoolers will love to hear the story about bees. A creative way to teach about the migration of bees to preschoolers is by the use of illustrations.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your preschoolers out in the garden and show them the beautiful plants. Show them a trunk of a tree and tell them that the trunk is a possible house for the bees.

    • 2

Show them a photo of a beehive on a trunk of a tree. Explain that the bees live in colonies by pointing at your photo. Give them a brief and simple explanation how the beehives are made.

    • 3

Show them photos of what the bees eat in order to live. Tell the children that just like them, the bees also need to eat in order to grow.

    • 4

Show the children a photo of winter where the trees are covered with snow. Tell the children that during winter, there are no leaves and flowers on the trees. Therefore, the bees have no food to eat.

    • 5

Show the children a photo of woodland or jungle in the tropics. Compare the two photos of the jungle with plenty of green plants and the picture of trees during winter where they are covered with snow.

    • 6

Ask the children, if the bees need food, where will they go? When the children point at the photo of the jungle in the tropics, explain that the bees need to look for places that have trees with green leaves because they need to eat. Tell the children that what you illustrated is how and why bees are migrating.

Show the bottle of honey to the children. Tell them that the bees have to be healthy in order to produce the honey.
