How to Eradicate Flying Ants

A colony of ants only produces a flying swarm once a year, when the size of the colony has grown too large. For a brief time, ants will be born with wings, and fly off together with the new queen ant to make a new nest. Sometimes these ants may look at your home as a possible nesting place. If you see a large swarm of flying ants within your home, this is likely the case and you will need to eliminate them.

Instructions

    • 1

Deter flying ants in the first place by keeping your kitchen floor clean and removing food crumbs from other areas of your house. Wipe up standing water from spills on the floor or from the counter following dish washing as ants find sources of water attractive. Keep your food inside plastic bags or containers with seals to prevent ants from smelling it. Place jars of honey or bottles of maple syrup inside the refrigerator.

    • 2

If you only see a few ants flying around inside your home, roll up a newspaper or magazine in a tube to swat them, or use a fly swatter. These ants do not belong to a swarm, and most likely are not attempting to create a nest in your house. If your windows and doors are open and do not have screens, close them to prevent more ants getting into your home.

    • 3

Spray flying ants with the aerosol insecticide. This is only a temporary solution to your flying ant problem, and is helpful if you have a swarm but have yet to locate the nest of ants.

    • 4

Locate the ant's nest. Depending on whether the ant nest is indoors or outdoors, use an ant-specific insecticide that specifies where you can apply it, and apply it directly to the nest. If the nest is behind a wall in your house, drill small holes to deliver the pesticide. Ant pesticides come in a liquid, granule, or dust. Read the label and choose one that best suits your needs. You will need to take out the nest to eradicate the ant population completely .

    • 5

If you are unable to locate the ant nest, make a barrier of insecticide around the foundation of your house. Reapply every one to two weeks.

    • 6

Place ant traps in locations where ants can enter your house. The ants will carry the bait back to their nest and feed it to the other ants. Ant traps or liquid ant bait work well.
