Bees and DIY Exterminating

Bees can become a nuisance in your yard, particularly in the late summer when they are the most active. They are considered beneficial insects because they pollinate plants and flowers and consume many pest insects. Bees, however, can deliver a painful sting that can cause itching, swelling and even anaphylactic shock in sensitive individuals. If bees are nesting too close to your home or property, deal with them immediately for the safety of your pets and family.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate nests on your property at sunset when bees are returning to their nests. Mark each nest site with a garden flag.

    • 2

Wearing tight protective clothing and a face mask, return later at night, when bees are least active, and use a flashlight to find the marked nests.

    • 3

Spray the entrance of each nest with a ready-to-use aerosol bee-killing spray. Cover the entire nest with the spray after the entrance has been treated.

    • 4

Check the bees nests the next day for any activity. If you discover any, retreat the nest at night with the bee-killing spray.

    • 5

When you are sure the bees have been exterminated, knock down their nests to prevent future nesting sites. Put the nests into a plastic bag and discard them in an outside garbage container.
