What Are Tiger Moths?

Tiger moths are brightly colored insects that are part of the Arctiidae family. There are a number of different types, including the virgin tiger and the Isabella tiger, which are found in the United States, and the garden tiger moth, found in Europe.
  1. Physical Appearance

    • The tiger moth can grow to 2 inches in length and is recognizable by its black-and-white-striped wings. White is the dominant color in older tiger moths, although black markings are still visible. The moth's hind wings are orange-red in color with black and dark blue spots. The moth's vivid coloration is an adaptation to make predators think that it is not suitable to eat. The tiger is also considered one of the hairier moth species, as its yellow body is covered in fine spines, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

    Habitat

    • Tiger moths are found where there are a large number of flowering plants, as these provide nectar, which tiger moths feed on with the use of siphoning mouths that act like a straw. Gardens, meadows and marshland are suitable homes for tiger moths. Tiger moths are also nocturnal insects that are attracted to bright lights. They are often found flying close to the light source. During the day, the moths are often found resting on plants and are often mistaken for butterflies.

    Life Cycle

    • In the autumn, tiger moths give birth to larvae on the leaves of herbaceous plants that grow close to the ground, such as nettles, dandelions, brambles and sunflowers. The offspring keep the form of larvae over the winter and then transform into caterpillars in spring, when they feed on the available foliage. The caterpillars then turn into a chrysalis and emerge as fully developed tiger moths between July and August.

    Caterpillar's Appearance

    • While in the caterpillar stage, tiger moths are often referred to as woolly bears. This is due to the caterpillar's distinctly hairy appearance. Its body is covered in fine spines that are brown and white in color. The spines cause irritation when touched, which deters predators. The caterpillar can grow to 3 inches in length.
