Things You'll Need
Instructions
Take one end of your wooden cube and cut a three-inch slant into it using your hand saw. This will be the front of your bee box, which will contain the holes into which the bees will fly.
Mark drilling spots along the slant that you previously cut in the cube. These holes will need to be different sizes to accommodate different types of bees, so allow approximate a half inch between each hole, as well as the top, bottom and sides. Once you've marked the holes, drill them as deep as possible using different size drill bits.
Measure and cut a 10-inch piece of wood to serve as the back of the bee box. Drill a hole large enough to hold heavy wire about two inches from the top of the wood.
Align the back of the bee box with the bottom of the cube on the side that has not been cut into a slant. The drill hole for hanging should be at the top of the box. Nail the bee box back in place using four long nails at each corner so it covers any holes that have been drilled completely through the cube, allowing several inches above the box for hanging. Be careful not to place any nails through the holes that you've drilled.
Measure and cut a 6-inch square out of excess untreated wood. This wood will serve as a roof and protective covering for the bee box. Place the wood on top of the bee box so it aligns with the edge of the cube where you've cut out the slant. Nail the roof in place using four long nails at each edge.
Wrap a piece of heavy gauge wire several times through the hole in the back of the bee box so it is secure enough to hold the weight of the box. Hang the box from a tree or fence far enough from your home to prevent bees from getting in.
